DOT Physical Exams

Federal law requires commercial drivers to have a DOT physical. See what it includes, what it costs, and how to get it done close to home.

DOT physical exams: What you need to know.

Federal law requires commercial drivers to pass a DOT physical exam. The exam checks your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall health to make sure you’re safe to drive. FLCH providers are certified by the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, the federal certification required to perform these exams.

We take a fair, supportive approach. Our goal is to help drivers find a path to certification.

  • Cost: $150 per exam. Group rates available for employers.
  • Insurance: DOT physicals are not covered by health insurance. They are often paid by employers or by the individual drivers.
  • Drug testing: Drug testing is separate from the DOT physical. We coordinate the process by connecting you with an approved lab and assisting with the paperwork.

What services are included in Occupational Health?

FLCH Occupational Health services support employers and workers with required medical screenings and compliance services. Current offerings include DOT physical exams, pre-placement and fitness-for-duty exams, drug testing coordination, workers’ compensation care, job-related health screenings, and vaccinations. Our goal is to help employers keep their workforce healthy, safe, and in compliance with state and federal requirements.

Who needs a DOT physical?

A DOT physical is required if you operate a commercial motor vehicle under federal rules. This includes:

  • CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) holders
  • Drivers of vehicles over 26,001 lbs.
  • Drivers transporting hazardous materials requiring placards
  • Drivers of vehicles carrying 9 or more passengers for pay, or 16 or more passengers without pay
  • Drivers based on individual state requirements
  • Interstate drivers of vehicles over 10,001 lbs.

If you are required to carry a DOT medical card, you must complete a DOT physical with a certified medical examiner.

Is this covered by my insurance?

No. DOT physical exams are not covered by health insurance. Some employers may pay for their drivers. Individual drivers pay $150 out of pocket at the time of the visit.

Do you do drug testing on-site?

Not on-site, but we coordinate the whole process. We give you the required lab paperwork, point you to an approved lab nearby, receive your results, and complete all required DOT forms. This keeps things simple for both employers and drivers.

How do I set up group appointments for my company?
